Greggs reaches milestone of 30 Outlet shops in bid to tackle food poverty across the UK
The shop opening marks 83 years of Greggs supporting local communities and addressing household food insecurity and food waste
According to the World Food Programme, a third of all food produced each year is wasted before it can be eaten, causing $940 billion per year in economic losses. With the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals calling to half per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer level by 2030, at Greggs we are committed to doing our bit to reduce food waste.
We’re addressing household food insecurity and food waste primarily through our Outlet shops, our dedicated channel for redistributing unsold food.
We’re proud to now have 30 Outlet shops in action, as we continue to focus on supporting socially deprived areas across the UK. The Cundy Road shop in East London marks an important milestone for us, highlighting our progress in our commitment to open 50 Outlet shops by 2025, as outlined in the Greggs Pledge. By selling day-old food products at a reduced price through the Outlets, families can spend less on great quality food, whilst also reducing food wastage. A share of the profits from each Outlet shop is donated to The Greggs Foundation, which is then passed on to local community organisations that tackle food poverty.
In our Greggs Pledge, we have promised to create 25% less food waste by 2025 compared to 2018, whilst also continuing to work towards donating 100% of surplus food to those in need. The expansion of the Outlets enables us to continue to make a global impact in our efforts to reduce food waste and to help to tackle poverty, hunger and deprivation across all the communities we operate in.
