The Greggs journey to becoming a leader in farm animal welfare
Animal welfare is a priority for Greggs and we expect all our meat, fish, dairy products, and eggs to come from animals that have been well treated.
As part of the Greggs Pledge commitments, we are committed to improve farm animal welfare.
A major step in this journey was back in 2014, when we started working with our suppliers to raise welfare standards for all meat and egg purchases.
Over the past eight years, we have continued to build on this vital work, introducing the Greggs Farm Animal Welfare Standards to ensure that no animals across our supply chain are exposed to abuse or exploitation.
Our promise to protect animal welfare is outlined in the Greggs Pledge, the ten commitments we have set to make a difference and change the world for the better.
We truly believe that good farm animal welfare is critical, not just for Greggs but for all businesses, and are pleased to see that standards, particularly across the UK, continue to improve.
We started our journey in 2012 with a Tier 5 rating in the Business Benchmark on Farm Animal Welfare and in 2016 we were delighted to achieve Tier 2 status. It is our goal that by 2025 we will have secured and maintained Tier 1 status.
To achieve this target, our priority is to improve welfare standards across pork and chicken. We’re taking steps including purchasing pork that has been bred outdoors, free from confinement and routine mutilations and sourcing chicken from farmers that rear birds slowly with a lower stock density.
We’ll continue to work hard to improve standards in our supply chain because it is the right thing to do, by our employees, by our customers and by our planet.
