Supporting communities and equality through Fairtrade partnerships

While coffee was the starting point for Greggs Fairtrade journey, the partnership today extends beyond coffee to include tea, cocoa and other key ingredients across our range.

This broader approach means supporting farmers and workers across multiple supply chains – with a continued focus on strengthening communities and promoting greater equality.

At the heart of Fairtrade is the Fairtrade Premium – an additional sum earned by farmers and workers, which they choose how to invest based on their local priorities. In many cases, this investment is focused on projects that support community development, inclusion and access to opportunity.

Investing in communities and opportunity

Producers are investing in initiatives that strengthen their wider communities, including training programmes and support for farmers to improve long-term resilience.

Fairtrade Premium investment is also supporting to drive progress on equality, particularly for women in farming communities. At Gatunguru, training and awareness programmes have supported a shift towards greater inclusion, with more women now co-owning farms, earning independent income and taking on leadership roles within co-operatives and factory operations.

This increased participation is creating more equitable decision-making structures and broader economic opportunities within local communities.

A partnership that goes beyond commodities

Through Greggs Fairtrade sourcing, investment is not only supporting farming practices but also contributing to stronger, more inclusive communities across our supply chain.

As we mark 20 years of Fairtrade coffee, our focus remains on the people behind the products – and on continuing to support partnerships that help build more resilient, equitable futures over the long term.
