Fairtrade Fortnight 2024
This year, our partners at Fairtrade are celebrating 30 years since the first Fairtrade certified products hit supermarket shelves.
Over this time, Fairtrade have built a global community of millions working towards more responsibly produced and fairly priced goods, as part of a fairer world for everyone.
Millions of Fairtrade farmers have secured a fairer price for what they grow through Fairtrade, and the ripple effect has seen children go to school, women take the lead and reforestation projects supported.
The Fairtrade Standards that producers work to include economic, social and environmental criteria that are designed to address many of the challenges producer’s face. Access to training and information is one of the benefits of Fairtrade, from business management and negotiation courses for women, to information on how to adapt to more climate resilient farming practices, supporting Fairtrade producers to change their future.
However, despite this success, there is still work to be done. As part of a chain in which power is unfairly distributed, farmers are frequently forced to sell their crops for less money than they cost to grow.
Here at Greggs, we’re proud to have had Fairtrade certified products on our menu for 18 years.
In this time, we have generated over £7.6 million in Fairtrade Premium for producers across our Fairtrade supply chain from the sales of our coffee, tea, fruit juices, sugar and cocoa in our hot chocolate and sweet treat range.
Fairtrade Premium is an additional sum of money Producer Organisations earn, on top of the Fairtrade Minimum Price, which supports them to invest back into their community or business opportunities of their choice.
2023 was a big year for Greggs and Fairtrade with us generating over £950,000 in Fairtrade Premium through our coffee sales alone.
We are committed this Fairtrade Fortnight, which runs from 9th September – 22nd September, to working with Fairtrade to build a fairer, more sustainable future for food.
