Greggs x AJ Bell Great Run Series -Fuelling Greatness: Volunteer winners

4 min read

We are now in our fifth year as the ‘official volunteer lunch provider of the AJ Bell Great Run Series’ and it continues to play a key role in supporting our commitments to give back to society, as part of our pledge to build stronger and healthier communities.

The Great Run Company believe that the challenge of a mass participation events provides the inspiration people need to get and stay active. They have been delivering such events for over 40 years and now cheer over 250,000 participants across finish lines annually.

Through our AJ Bell Great Run Series partnership, we are proud to have delivered over 25,000 lunches to the amazing volunteers working across events in the UK. In 2024 alone, Greggs will have delivered over 5,000 lunches to volunteers, each including one of our salads: testament to the fact that over 30% of our range in 2023 consisted of healthier choice products.

Again, as part of this year’s partnership, we launched a competition to celebrate and recognise the valuable contributions of volunteers participating in the AJ Bell Great Run Series. The competition, titled Greggs: Fuelling Greatness, sought to find the most unique volunteer stories - with lucky winners taking home the coveted prize of a £50 Greggs high roller gift card.

Our 5 winners from the Spring events are below, but thank you and well done to all volunteers taking part in this year’s series:

I volunteered at the Glasgow Great Run last year. I always help out at the finishing line with handling out the bags, as usually the boxes are huge. When getting to the bottom of the box, I end up sitting in the huge box sitting amongst the bags, making up a small collection of bags to hand over to other volunteers to give to the runners. One of the runners thought I was part of the thank you gift bags.

Funniest moment was when I looked up Baldwin street and there was this gigantic figure of an Ape running down the road towards me, it was air filled so it was more the size of King Kong than just any normal ape costume, brilliant moment had me in ore that someone had just run the distance they had in the costume in the heat we had that day and in hysterics of King Kong coming towards me at a decent pace mind wobbling side to side as he did...

I've been thinking about running myself again after many years on the sidelines as a spectator and Marshall and it keeps getting put off even thou I love running the day had such a motivational impact on me that the following day I went out and ran my 1st 1km in over 30 years and plan in going again very soon, and let's see where that takes me.

It was a fun experience volunteering for the event, seeing people of all ages and for different causes compete! Highlight of the day was being able to help and get the crowd pumped up for the race as well as seeing a runner with a funky dyed beard and outfit!

Seeing the empty table could not help but try the splits on it and hearing the laughter before the race started!

Volunteering at the run is so fun, I have volunteered with my football team for the past 2 years on the water station and it is so fun shouting all the runners on. It is so inspiring seeing everybody running for themselves or charities and doing it for such a great cause. The whole day I couldn’t recommend enough as it’s great to give the runners help when they need it most. It has also inspired me to enter next year!

I volunteered with my partner Tim at the start line, seeing the green wave over the line, which we both loved. Afterwards we went over to the 12 mile marker to cheer on the runners. When they were saying "1 mile to go" I reminded them it was 1.1, much to the amusement of many.
